"Welcome Mat" Meeting Request #164

Dear Morning Call Editorial Board:

My name is Bill Villa.

I'm 54 years old, a lifelong resident of Allentown, and a 30+ year subscriber to The Morning Call.

I have reason to believe Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin is soft on select/connected drunk drivers who kill people.

Even more troubling, I have reason to believe The Morning Call news department facilitates Mr. Martin going easy on select/connected homicidal drunk drivers by way of the information it chooses to include--and not include--in its coverage of these criminal cases.

My only daughter Sheena was killed by a drunk driver on her 25th birthday, March 24, 2006.

Sheena's convicted killer is the son of a prominent local attorney whose law firm has represented The Morning Call for many years.

Numerous members of this law firm have been generous and regular contributors to the Committee to Elect Jim Martin, according to public records at Lehigh County Voter Registration.

During the criminal proceedings against Sheena's killer, I was disappointed and distressed by what I perceived to be a purposefully unenthusiastic prosecution by DA Jim Martin and news coverage by The Morning Call that was slanted in favor of the criminal defendant's family -- especially toward the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.

I respectfully request a meeting with The Morning Call Editorial Board to discuss my concerns regarding the newspaper's coverage of my daughter Sheena's case.

I want to be heard by you on this topic.

And The Morning Call Editorial Board's "welcome mat always is out for those who want to be heard." -mcall.com

Additionally, I would like to discuss The Morning Call's coverage of a 2003 vehicular crash death and the soft outcome for the criminal defendant in this case.

And finally, I would like to discuss a September 2007 DUI homicide case, including ...

* the surprisingly soft outcome for a criminal defendant who had received a 2nd DUI after having committed vehicular homicide while DUI

* the relationship between DA Jim Martin and the criminal defendant's grandfather who was an invited guest at Mr. Martin's January 2008 swearing-in ceremony

* the "excellent questions that deserve to be answered" (your own Investigations Editor Tim Darragh's words) that I have raised regarding this DUI homicide case

Quoting from "Meet The Editorial Board" articles in your web site's archives ...

"... the [Morning Call Editorial] board intends to be as open with readers as possible. It meets regularly -- a few times every week -- with people and groups about topics of public interest. The Lehigh Valley area is blessed to have public-spirited citizens who recognize that the newspaper is a corporate citizen that strives to be engaged in the debate on such issues, and that tries to offer leadership. The welcome mat always is out for those who want to be heard." -www.mcall.com

This is my 164th request for a "Welcome Mat" meeting with The Morning Call Editorial Board.

I request that you honor it, and my daughter Sheena, by booking a meeting with me.

I look forward to hearing from you and scheduling a date and time to meet with the 5-member Morning Call Editorial Board.

Open Letter To Bernie O'Mcall/O'Hare, Michael Molovinsky, and Dave Najarian, the fine folks who have brought you this new blog ...

Dave Najarian, it's revealing that you didn't slam on the Comment Moderation (and run for the hills and create this blog) after Bernie O'Mcall attacked my wife Angie last evening at your "Lehigh Valley Logic" blog.

Instead, you blocked comments after I gave Bernie the uppercut I think any husband would have given Bernie, if Bernie had attacked their wife like that.

You "guys" don't fight fair.

As soon as it's obvious you're losing an argument, you start cheating by quashing dissent.

It's a Republican thing I guess.

FYI, the smear tactics Bernie O'Mcall is attempting against Sheena's step-mother Angie and me, i.e., the same strategy he has used to cripple other blogs and their authors and/or make them go poof (permanently or temporarily) won't work on us.

Here's why: unlike most people, we don't care what people think of us.

And, as I believe you've been experiencing, if you've been reading along at Michael Molovinsky's blog and at Dave Najarian's blog and at Bernie O'Mcall's blog (and it was the pusillanimous Bernie who started the comment disabling/muzzling strategy), we can absorb whatever Bernie O spews at us ... and then reverse/dump him on his lying derriere ... every time after time after time.

I imagine you'll be seeing a lot of that here.

Unless, of course, some pusillanimous person all of a sudden starts moderating or disabling comments on what had been an "open" dialogue.

Dave Najarian: there's no legitimate reason for you to not post the comment I made at 7:00am or so this morning at "Northern Lehigh Valley Logic" and to keep that "open" discussion going, there.

The only reason to not post it is because you wanna help hold both my arms and legs down and let Bernie O'Mcall and his loyal dunce Mike Molovinsky punch me, and Angie, with no pesky interference-- that is, us defending ourselves and countering Bernie's lies and mildly amusing topic misdirections.

Dave Najarian, you're in the legal/justice business, right? You're an attorney.

You're also an elected official, correct?

I hope your clients and constituents are duly impressed by your active participation in the creation and promotion of this blog.

Please visit regularly.

Note To Bernie O'Mcall's Allies ...

Guys (and we know it's all guys), you all know how much Bernie HATES "anonymous snarks."

He routinely deletes them at his blog.

Out of respect for Bernie, use your real names when slamming me, grieving father Bill Villa, at this new blog.

Thank you for your consideration and your courage.

A lunatic post sent to NLV, like I really was up at 7:00am waiting for it ...

... interesting that you didn't enable Comment Moderation after Bernie attacked my wife.

But you enabled it after I gave him the uppercut he had coming. And thus enabled him.

You "guys" don't fight fair.

Soon as it's obvious you're losing, you start cheating.

And, as I believe you've been experiencing, we can also absorb whatever that fat fuck spews at us ... and then reverse/dump him on his fat ass. Every time after time after time.

Unless, of course, some pussy all of a sudden starts moderating comments on what had been an all day dialogue.

Dave, there's no legitimate reason for you to not post the comment I made at 7:00am or so this morning.

Only reason to not post it is cuz you'd wanna hold down both my arms and legs and let Bernie punch me, and Angie, with no pesky interference-- i.e., us defending ourselves and countering his lies and topic misdirections.

This is a brilliant solution to the free-speech-vs.-blog-hijacking problem, NLVLogic.

That said, I personally don't intend to ever visit this blog again. Less than a dozen posts in and there's too much hate and anger here already.

E-Mail sent to Lehigh County DA Jim Martin on June 27, 2008 …

Subject Heading: Your Cowardly Refusal To Meet With Me

Mr. Martin, I was disappointed--but not surprised--hearing from your office's Crime Victim Advocate Christina Wallace recently that you will "never" meet with me to discuss the reasonable questions I have about your office's handling of my daughter Sheena’s killer’s case an a DUI Homicide case that “resolved” in September 2007 that I’ve been inquiring about.

I thought our first meeting on August 15, 2006 was productive.

At that meeting you didn't even try to conceal your empathy with and support for the homicidal drunk driver who killed my daughter Sheena. And this was valuable information I put to good use in having hundreds of people write letters to you and to the Judge informing you that thousands of people were watching Sheena's case very closely in an election year for both of you. As you know, this 'groundswarm' strategy was the difference between the slap on the wrist (house arrest/work release) Sheena’s killer may have gotten and the 5.5 to 12 years in state prison he is currently serving.

Illuminating and inspiring statements you made to me during our August 15, 2006 meeting with a witness present included:

* "I've received letters of support for the young man (i.e., my daughter Sheena’s killer) and I'm impressed by these letters." (Mr. Martin, I've always assumed these letters came from lawyers at the criminal defendant’s father’s law firm, many of whom have been generous and regular contributors to the Committee to Elect Jim Martin as can be discerned via public records at Lehigh County Voter Registration).

* "Mr. Villa, how would you feel if you were this boy's father?"

* "I'LL COME AFTER YOU! I'LL COME AFTER YOU IN THE MEDIA!" (This one you bellowed at me, the grieving father, when I told you I knew the surrealistically high crash speed that was indicative of the defendant terrorizing Sheena with speed; malice; and third degree murder).

* "Let's hope there's nothing wrong with the blood evidence because if there is I'll have to take that [major] charge off the table."

... which is exactly what you did in the September 2007 DUI Homicide case I’ve been inquiring about-- that is, you had Chief Deputy DA Renee Smith phone the DUI homicide victim’s father, the night before trial, and tell him that the Judge had "tossed" the blood evidence (and this wasn't true) so that you could take the major charge off the table for the criminal defendant's grandfather, a longtime pal of yours.

Mr. Martin, I'm certain you had this same 11th hour major charge drop shell game in mind in February 2007, when you secretly moved my daughter Sheena’s killer’s guilty plea hearing up 10 days, from February 12 to February 2, and purposefully did not inform Sheena's family of this next court date's schedule change.

Had we not heard about this secret date switcheroo (which was executed on January 17, 2007) from a concerned and anonymous insider informant in late January 2007, and had not been in attendance at the guilty plea hearing on February 2, 2007, I'm certain you would have told the Judge the same lie you told him on September 25, 2007 in the other DUI homicide case, and that is ...

that you were withdrawing the major charge (i.e., the charge that carries a state mandatory minimum 3 to 6 year state prison sentence) as "part of a plea agreement that both sides were in agreement with."

I'm sure glad we were tipped off and that Sheena's family was in court on February 2, 2007 forcing you to keep that major 3 to 6 charge on the table through our mere presence.

Unfortunately, the “September 2007” grieving family was not in attendance on September 25, 2007 when their son's killer unexpectedly ditched his next day trial start and pled guilty-- and why not, since you had thoughtfully dropped 9 of the 14 charges against him, including that major 3 to 6 charge, in a night before trial plea deal that the victim’s family was on record as being vehemently against since April 2007 when they found out that their son’s killer had scored a 2nd DUI in Northampton County after killing their son driving drunk.

Helpfully--and erroneously--The Morning Call reported on September 26, 2007 that the victim’s family "had agreed earlier this year to prosecutors dropping the major charge."

The Morning Call has yet to print a retraction or a clarification.

I know all this, Mr. Martin, because I have spoken at length with the father of the DUI Homicide victim in this case. And he has spoken with Lehigh Valley Hospital who informed him that there was nothing inadmissible about the blood evidence your office told him had been "tossed" by the Judge the night before trial because of an error on Lehigh Valley Hospital's part involving the paperwork on the chain of custody of the blood evidence. This was a complete fabrication.

And most damning: the criminal defendant’s grandfather, your longtime pal, who the Villa family has known for 40 years, told my parents, on the steps of the Cathedral, that you and he are longtime friends and that he was an invited guest at your invitation-only swearing-in ceremony in January 2008, 4 months after you had manipulated 18 months in county jail for his grandson, instead of the state mandatory minimum 3 to 6 years in state prison.

In a nutshell, Jim, thousands of Lehigh County voters have your number.

We know how you fix DUI Homicide cases for cronies.

And there's a big difference between 'prosecutorial discretion' (which you can hide behind in my daughter Sheena's case) and flat-out lying-- to a judge, to the victim's family, and about Lehigh Valley Hospital, the night before a scheduled trial.

A district attorney--the county's top law enforcement officer--is not supposed to side with the criminal defendants and against the grieving families of crime victims.

But this is exactly what you do whenever you feel like it.

We are determined to spare future grieving family members of DUI Homicide victims the needlessly cruel added agony of experiencing you siding against their deceased loved one and cutting their loved one's killer the break of a lifetime.

Like you did in my daughter Sheena’s death case by not charging third degree murder when it clearly applied.

Like you did in the “September 2007” case by making that major 3 to 6 charge vanish via flagrant and arrogant abuse of power, the night before trial.

Mr. Martin, our goal is to have you removed from office and disbarred.

And we're telling you this because we want you to see it coming at you like a drunk driver.

In the interest of being fair, please let me share my greatest comment of all, as I not only point out Bill Villa's failings, but that of his wife, young son, and of course his deceased daughter, who, being dead, won't be able to post any comments defending herself or her Dad, Thank God, right Bernie?

Villa,

There is no doubt in my mind that statement was made by you or your wife. It's the same claim you've made publicly before, it is off topic, is a personal attack, and is made by someone using AOL as an ISP.

In other words, it's you.

You (and your wife) post comments anonymously. You do it to attack other people. You have even bragged about it in emails to me. If you insist on claiming you don't do that sort of thing, I'll post your email.

I won't stop there. I'll post your emails dancing on the graves of laid off Morning Call reporters. Since you could not keep a confidence with me, I'll lay out exactly what kind of snake you are. I'll also post some of the other things you have said about some bloggers who thing you are their friend.

Between you and me, you've given me plenty of ammo. Ordinarily, I would not do that to somebody, but I'll do it to you.

You publicly revealed information I told you in confidence. You apologized and then did it again. You did it under under your name and as "Ernie" at the MC reader forum.

Naturally, I no longer believe a word you say. You lie and do whatever you can to advance your personal vendetta against the MC and the Lehigh County DA.

What's worse, you're a bully. You have threatened Michael Molovinsky, telling him he should walk to the other side of the street if he sees you coming.

Do whatever the hell you want. But you have to accept the consequences of your own dishonest behavior. One of them is that I no longer believe a word you say.

When you post here anonymously, I will nail you every time I think it is you.

All my respect for you is gone. Your daughter's death is no excuse for dishonest behavior. It's no reason for you to threaten people.

Your whole boycott of the MC is just more bullshit from a sick man who blames everyone for his daughter's death. You want people to boycott a site that your pepper with comments. How irrational is that?

All you've succeeded in doing is alienating every person who tries to help you. Well, I'm done trying to help you.

Like most bullies, you turn tail when you actually have an opportunity to do something. On the evening when you were present in the same room w/ DA Martin before the LC Comm'rs, you were as quiet as a mouse. You had every opportunity to publicly challenge him, and in a setting where he could defend himself. But you did nothing.

So you want to dance? Knock yourself out.

You know who I feel sorry for? Not your wife. She enables your dry drunk behavior.

But I feel sorry for your son. You spend every waking moment at war with this person and that. In the meantime, your son is growing up and you are not helping him. Is he in even one sport? You are so caught up with your departed daughter that you are ignoring a son who is very much alive. When you're not in NYC being an advertising whore, you spend your time sending emails and commenting on blogs, like that will bring your daughter back.

It won't.

It's time for you to get your head out of your ass and take care of and cherish the children you have. I am done trying to be nice to you. From this point forward, every threatening remark you make will be forwarded to the appropriate authority.

Here's the Victim Impact Statement I presented in court on April 17, 2007, when my daughter Sheena's killer was sentenced ...

Your Honor, Good Morning …

How can I put into words the impact I feel from losing my daughter Sheena, who I adored.

It's like the world has been knocked off its axis and it's rolling away and I'm chasing after it trying to put everything back to how it was before.

That's how surrealistically awful and overwhelming and unfair and unsafe the world feels to me now because of the defendant.

I have so many wonderful memories of Sheena. Sheena was my first born and my only daughter and she always looked like a little bunny
to me— even on her 25th birthday which turned out to be her last day with us: March 23rd, 2006.

Sheena was a happy girl, she laughed a lot, and I can still hear her giggle. Sometimes when I'm driving in her car or I'm alone somewhere I'll make a dumb dad joke out loud that I know Sheena would laugh at if she were here just so I can conjure up the sound of her laugh in my memory. I shouldn't have to do this. Sheena should still be here laughing and living with us and sitting next to me.

I can't think of Sheena without immediately thinking of her brother Patrick. Sheena & Patrick were like a couple, just inseparable best friends their entire lives from the time Sheena was 2 and Patrick was born. They were like twins, Sheena & Patrick, and they always got along together so beautifully.

As a parent, it was comforting for me to picture Sheena & Patrick having each other to grow old with long after both of their parents were gone. But that happy image has been replaced by the sad visuals I have now of my son Patrick going through life without his best friend and sister Sheena … and that Sheena's two younger brothers, Cruz, and Gianni, don't have the sister they knew and loved anymore either because Robert LaBarre killed her.

Sheena Marie Villa was a dancer, a terrific dancer, and a beloved dance teacher and choreographer and I hope I'll always be able to picture her dancing like I still can now ... at 7 years old ... at 12 ... at 18 ... at 24.

Dancing made Sheena so happy she'd be just bursting with joy
up there on stage entertaining people and having fun. It always felt really good to watch Sheena dance and to see her feeling so happy, dancing. We'll never see Sheena dancing, or happy, ever again.

Like static or a TV channel that turns itself on and forces me
to watch it, all my happy memories of Sheena are now routinely interrupted by the horrific images I have in my mind of Sheena's final hours.

If I live to be a hundred, I'll never forget how my little bunny Sheena looked in the trauma-neuro intensive care unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital on her last birthday.

Her cute little freckled face was swollen to the size of a basketball.

Her head was oozing blood through a thick wad of bandages that were wrapped from her eyebrows to the back of her neck.

Both of her graceful dancer arms were broken and in casts.

Her lips were bulging out to about ten times their normal size.

Her beautiful blue eyes, that we'd never see again, were tightly
shut, swollen slits.

Her cheeks could be kissed if you leaned in very carefully and avoided hitting the tubes and the life-support machinery that was breathing for her, and beating her heart for her, and keeping
her technically alive.

To relieve the pressure that was building up inside Sheena's skull, the result of her brain swelling so rapidly, neurosurgeons used a surgical saw and cut the top of my daughter Sheena's head off.

This was to give her brain room to keep swelling outside of her skull. The hope being that her brain might eventually stop swelling and be able to be put back inside her head.

Sheena didn't survive the surgery. Her brain herniated which means it collapsed and fell backwards down her spinal column.

Sheena died because the defendant wasn't getting his way.

That's what the surviving backseat passenger told me, the police, in two interviews, and the District Attorney's office in a third interview.

Your Honor, because Mr. ____ doesn't remember killing Sheena, I think it's important that he hears what's in the police record regarding how the crash occurred.

_____ told the police that Sheena just wanted a ride home. It was her birthday and she wanted to go home to her mother's house and watch a movie and she made this clear to the defendant.

But he drove off in the opposite direction of Sheena's house and
kept proposing that they all go to his house instead-- as if it were
his birthday, and as if his .24 blood alcohol content, three times the legal limit, wasn't enough drinking for one night.

We've been told that Sheena had to eventually insist that he drive
her home. And it was at this point that the defendant was turning onto Parkway Boulevard and was heading east in the direction of Sheena's house. But as he completed this turn we've been told, he stepped on the gas really hard and began to accelerate rapidly. The 27 year-old defendant was throwing a tantrum because he wasn't getting his way.

The backseat passenger immediately told him to slow down. The defendant's response was to turn around and look at him briefly and then resume stepping on the gas increasingly harder and harder while consciously disregarding his two passengers screaming at him to slow down.

The backseat passenger told me, the police, and the DA's office that the defendant's speed-terrorizing of his two passengers lasted about 30 seconds-- from the turn at Cedar Crest and Parkway Boulevard to the tree on Parkway Boulevard ... and the Officer who did the crash reconstruction told me that 30 seconds times out right.

Your Honor, 30 seconds is an eternity when you're screaming and pleading for your life as we've been told my daughter Sheena was.

We've been told by a person who was there that the final 30 seconds of Sheena's life were spent in tortured, screaming, terror at the hands of the defendant.

Here's how long 30 seconds is (hit stop watch) 0-30

The Officer who did the crash reconstruction told this court on February 2nd that the defendant was traveling a minimum speed of 85miles per hour right before he hit the tree on Parkway Boulevard.

Please let's all linger on this for a moment ... a minimum speed
of 85 miles per hour ... on a 35 mile per hour residential street.

Your Honor, the physical evidence in this case, and common sense, should tell anyone that this was not a joyride and that what resulted cannot be called an "accident."

I know my daughter Sheena would have been profoundly terrified
at going 85-PLUS miles per hour against her will.

Do you know how everyone has a greatest fear and a worst way to die? For some people it might be drowning, or fire, or falling from a high building. For Sheena it was dying in a car crash. Sheena was nervous and compulsively cautious about cars and speed. She didn't get her driver's license until she was almost 20 and she drove like an old lady. Anyone who knew Sheena even casually, as the defendant did, knew this about her.

And so this is the image that's been playing in my mind like an endless loop since the crash, Your Honor ...

the image of my daughter Sheena screaming and pleading for her life as the defendant steps on the gas harder & harder for 30 seconds ...

eventually losing control of the terror-tantrum he's throwing at her ... and according to the crash reconstruction, careening across Parkway Boulevard, the vehicle launching and going airborne as it hits the curb on the other side of the street, it's now flying and leaning towards the tree, roof-first, the roof right over Sheena’s head ... and then it crashes into the tree ... both of Sheena's arms breaking as she tries to brace herself ... and then the roof collapses onto Sheena and crushes her skull and all of this is happening at 85-PLUS miles per hour.

Your Honor, The Express-Times reported a neighbor saying she could feel the impact of Sheena's crash inside her house, down the block.

Another neighbor told me he'll never forget the tinkling sound of the vehicle's glass still raining down from the tree when he arrived on the scene.

And one of the EMS crew who responded to the crash found out later that day that the girl who had to be cut out of the defendant's crushed Lexus was his daughter's dance teacher, Miss Sheena.

The aresting Officer told me in an email dated March 19th that he does not know of an Allentown drunk-driving death case with numbers as excessively high as were this defendant's combination .24 blood alcohol content and crash speed of 85-PLUS miles per hour.

Your Honor, at the defendant's guilty plea hearing on February 2nd, you asked the prosecutor if Sheena's family was satisfied with the charges that were filed against Sheena's killer and he told you that we thought a charge of third degree murder should have been filed and you asked Mr. Director, "did you find malice?" which is required for a charge
of third degree murder.

Your Honor, I need to verbalize for this court the well-settled legal definition of malice, because I will go to my grave knowing that this perfectly describes what the defendant did to my daughter Sheena and that he should have been charged with third degree murder:

"Malice consists of a wickedness of disposition, hardness
of heart, cruelty, recklessness of consequences, and a mind regardless of social duty, although a particular person may not be intended to be injured. Malice may be found where the defendant consciously disregarded an unjustified and extremely high risk that his actions might cause serious bodily injury."

On February 2nd, District Attorney Jim Martin told TV's Channel 69 News in a report they aired that the defendant's malice would be, quote, "next to impossible to prove."

Really? With alcohol and speed numbers more excessive than any the lead investigating police officer has ever seen in the City of Allentown ... PLUS ... a surviving eyewitness to the malice?

Next to impossible to prove?

Something's not right here.

Your Honor, as we know, the defendant's father is an attorney and a partner in one of Allentown's most powerful and most politically-connected law firms.

This caused me great concern this past year that the defendant might receive preferential treatment from the DA because of his father's connections.

For the record, the following local and state officials all encouraged me to apply and maintain an unrelenting pressure on District Attorney Jim Martin as my best defense against any possible preferential treatment of the defendant:

* Allentown Chief of Police Roger MacLean

* Pennsylvania State Representative Jennifer Mann

* Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham

* District Justice Michele Varricchio

* Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski

* Allentown City Councilman Tony Phillips

* State Senator Charlie Dent

* State Representative Doug Reichley

* Pennsylvania Chief Deputy Attorney General Frank Fina

* and assistant to the coroner, Andy Kehm

Your Honor, although I'm relieved that none of the significant charges against Sheena's killer were plea-bargained away behind closed doors, I believe District Attorney Martin cut the defendant and his family the break of a lifetime by not charging him with third degree murder.

And then Your Honor, in a scene possibly indicative of Divine Intervention, on February 2nd, in this courtroom, during his guilty plea hearing before you, I heard the defendant confess to malice and third degree murder.

He told you that he knew he was a blackout drinker and that he was in a blackout during his drunk driving crash that killed Sheena.

In "Commonwealth vs Levin," right down the road in Philadelphia County, Joseph Levin told the police that he knew he was a blackout drinker and that he was in a blackout during his drunk driving crash that killed pedestrian Christine Schofield.

Your Honor, in upholding Mr. Levin's conviction of third degree murder in 2003, the Pennsylvania Superior Court cited Mr. Levin's knowledge of being a blackout drinker, and yet still getting behind the wheel drunk, as the qualifying malice required for a charge of third degree murder.

The judges ruled:

"This knowledge (that is, knowing he was a blackout drinker) and his action in light of this knowledge (that is, he got behind the wheel drunk knowing he was a blackout drinker) constitutes a recklessness of consequences and a disregard for social duty. Mr. Levin did indeed disregard that his actions would cause serious bodily injury. Accordingly, we find that there was sufficient evidence to conclude that he possessed the requisite malice for conviction of third degree murder. Judgment of sentence affirmed."

Mr. Levin is currently serving the sentence he got right down the road in Philadelphia County: 12 and one-half to twenty-five years in a Pennsylvania State Penitentiary.

Your Honor, if the defendant had been charged with third degree murder, you would have had the opportunity here today to sentence him to a maximum of 20 to 40 years in prison.

By not charging third degree murder, District Attorney Martin has managed to successfully contain the damage for the defendant and the defendant's family to a maximum possible sentence of 9.5 to 19 years.

Your Honor, please sentence Sheena's killer to serve that maximum sentence ...

and not just because of the presence of malice in Sheena's death ...

but also because of the defendant's complete absence of remorse for killing Sheena.

In the first weeks after the crash, Sheena's girlfriend _____ _____ told the police that she was sickened by the defendant telling her that Sheena being dead was "nothing he needs to beat himself up over" and that his father would be arranging weekend jail for him.

The day after he was finally charged with killing Sheena and his picture was on the front page of The Morning Call and he was the lead story on three TV news programs, the very next evening the defendant was spotted dining out at the high-profile Apollo Grill in Bethlehem by Sheena's aunt, who works there, and by a family friend who also knows the defendant.

Forget feeling remorse ... or maybe even a little shame? The defendant wasn't even embarrassed to be seen out in public partying the day after being charged with killing Sheena.

Your Honor, words can't express how infuriated Sheena's family has been by the defendant's consistently cavalier behavior since he killed Sheena.

Pre-Trial Services told me and the police that at their first meeting with the defendant, his single-minded, and rather testy focus was not on remorse, or recovery, or rehabilitation ...

it was on recreation and relaxation, Your Honor, his, by way of a vacation to Belize, Central America that he had booked prior to killing Sheena and still wanted to go on!

Pre-Trial Services told us that the defendant got visibly annoyed upon hearing that he'd have to fill out this form and this form and this form and that it was ... not likely ... his vacation plans would be approved, since he was, after all, out on bail for homicide.

Well, as we all know, last August, the defendant simply blew off all
that paperwork and he just went ... to Belize, Central America ... he left the United States ... completely unauthorized ... and enjoyed a lavish 10-day vacation in an expensive tropical paradise while
out on bail for killing my daughter Sheena.

And I'm the person who discovered he was missing and reported it, Your Honor, not Pre-Trial Services or the DA's office. They had no clue where he was ... or if he was coming back.

Exactly how self-absorbed and cavalierly arrogant ... was ... taking that trip?

And who does the defendant think he is?

Your Honor, we think a good long period of incarceration so he has ample time to figure out who he wants to be in the future will do the defendant a world of good, starting today.

And please keep in mind that ...

Sheena Villa is not gone for the state mandatory minimum 3 years.

Sheena's not gone for 3 to 6 years or 3 to 10 years.

Sheena's not gone for 6 to 12 years ... or 9.5 to 19 years ... or even 20 to 40 years.

Your Honor: Sheena Villa is gone FOREVER ...

because this defendant gave US a LIFE SENTENCE.

He gave US the MAXIMUM SENTENCE POSSIBLE.

All things considered in this case, Your Honor ...

we believe that JUSTICE would be giving the defendant the MAXIMUM SENTENCE POSSIBLE too.

Please sentence him, TO SERVE:

9.5 years in a Pennsylvania State Penitentiary ...

to be followed by 9.5 years of parole.

Judge Steinberg, Your Honor, thank you, for your consideration today.

"I simply believe the Morning Call should do their own work." -Dave Najarian

I'm with you, Dave. And here's something to investigate: where in the heck did The Morning Call Editorial Board, its "Philosophy," and "Welcome Mat" policy get to? Remember this? It was the basis for several posts Bernie O'Mcall/O'Hare did at LV Ramblings back in the days before his relationship with me became, in his words, "a liability," re: his blossoming relationship with MC Opinions VP and "Blogger Tuesday" creator, Glenn Kranzley.

For years & years & years, The Morning Call Editorial Board had a "Welcome Mat" policy that was reprinted annually in their "newspaper" and was a fixture at The Morning Call web site (that's where Bernie spotted it; click on Opinion; click on Meet The Editorial Board; click on Our Philosophy; it was in there) and it read thusly:

"... the [Morning Call Editorial] board intends to be as open with readers as possible.

I see that TMC's staff listings page is finally back up there at mcall.com and that's nice.

But heck if I can find any mention of TMC Editorial Board, it's "Philosophy," or its endearingly charming "Welcome Mat" policy, which, by the way, The Morning Call has denied me the courtesy of, 164 times so far, and still counting, almost daily.

Did they move (hide?) their "Welcome Mat" policy and make it really hard to find?

Can anyone (Bernie?) find it up there at mcall.com?

In its old place at the Opinion click is "Valley Blogosphere" and "Blogger Tuesday" and "Featured Local Blog Of The Week."

Did TMC just poof its "Welcome Mat" policy?

Was I ... by any chance ... responsible for this?

And if it is poof, well well ... now that's the kind of thing the old Bernie O'Hare would have been all over.

But now, in this new age of "Blogger Tuesday," Bernie O'Mcall is as quiet, and as compliant, as an aquiver mouse about this.

How times change.

Somebody find that "Welcome Mat" policy at mcall.com and prove me wrong, it'll be a nice coup for you (and Kranzley/Bernie/MM, no cheating and getting it put back up there long enough for a Blogger Tuesday blogger to show me up ;)

But seriously, can anyone find TMC's "Welcome Mat" policy at mcall.com?

How about that new Watchdog Reporter, Paul Muschick?

Bill, and Angie, I applaud you.

What you have done in the local blog world this past month in defense of yourself and your family is the blogging equivalent of what Muhammad Ali did to George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. It was a brilliant strategy Ali dubbed, "Rope-A-Dope," and it was a beautiful thing to watch. It resulted in big bad nasty bully George getting knocked out, to everyone's surprise, except Ali's. Over the Labor Day weekend, in between several Bar-B-Q's and trips to The Allentown Fair, I watched you Rope-A-Dope about a half a dozen nasty blogger bullies and knock them all clean out of the ring. It was a stunning performance and I just had to tell you that.

"I have a style that I'm going to use until convinced something else works better." -Allentown City Councilor Michael Donovan

Michael, you're from out of town, word of advice: when dealing with Allentown PA power brokers who routinely cheat and lie (e.g., TMC's Editorial/Opinions VP Glenn Kranzley or DA Jim Martin), 'civility' will get you absolutely nowhere fast. It will only make it easier for the crooked cronies to ignore you. And while my style (and let's call it 'head-butting') has not (yet) gotten me that meeting with the Morning Call Editorial Board I crave, head-butting had a terrific effect on DA Jim Martin in that it greatly facilitated getting the homicidal drunk driver who killed my daughter Sheena 5.5 to 12 years in state prison instead of a weekend in jail and some house arrest.

Sure, there's a time for pussy-footing.

But it couldn't hurt to have a more testosterone-based "Head-Butting Plan B" in your bag of communications tools too.

I guess it depends on what's more important to you: obsessively focusing on "civil process" ... or getting results.

From, "Best Of Bill Villa," a compilation of great comments by Bill culled from blogs in our local blogosphere ...

"Who was it that stood up to the vile United States Senator McCarthy ..." -Chris Casey

TV broadcaster and writer Edward R. Murrow was the first to publicly stand up to and challenge the opportunistic, manipulative, dishonest, and seemingly untouchable Senator Joe McCarthy, figuratively blowing McCarthy's head off in back to back weekly episodes of his news program, "See It Now." Murrow's courage and skill in dissecting McCarthy's pathology on live television opened the flood gates of criticism and eventual Senate censure of McCarthy who died of alcoholism.

[BV Note: the analogies are so intriguing on many fronts, at least to me anyway ...]

Had this initiative passed on April 9, Lehigh County and Allentown would have received $1 million for more police on the streets. Which we really need.

Your comment:

But I feel sorry for your son. You spend every waking moment at war with this person and that. In the meantime, your son is growing up and you are not helping him. Is he in even one sport?

This is reaching. I know for a fact that Bill spends quality time with his son and they have a great relationship....

Is he even in one sport?"

Who the hell cares? Sports are over-rated and for bully mentality types, perhaps such as yourself. All the behind the scenes deal making to protect a name and produce a winner kinda resembles this:
